I have had to start the 1502 with one of those little lithium ion jump starter packs every time. I have yet to trace it back to the battery or the alternator. I’m suspecting the alternator as the battery is supposedly new. So it starts with the battery pack, but when I try to jump it with another car, its like the battery is more dead then when I try without it... Any idea why? I’m asking mainly because im trying to take it for a quick spin before I put the exhaust on and the battery pack is dead and takes forever to charge!
UPDATE: I just needed to let it charge for a few minutes as a few of you suggested. Thanks!!

My guess is that the ion jump start can provide enough amps to start the car while when you jump it with a car, you’re not getting enough amps and you have to build some charge in the battery before the car will start. This happened with my work F350, the battery would drain over days off and I would have to change it with a running car for a few minutes before it would start.
My bet is the battery is dead, probably from just sitting so long and not being charged at all. Put a volt meter on both the alternator and the battery. If the alternator is giving you more than ~12.5 volts, you’re good. I also suspect it’s the battery because if it was the alternator, the car would start to die as you drove as the battery isn’t getting charged.

What E90M3 said, but if there is a radio be sure it isn’t wired straight into the battery. A dome or trunk light may also be the culprit.

Cool, thanks! That makes sense as it dosen’t die once it’s been started. It does die while the engine is still cold but I think that’s a carb tuning thing.
I’m charging it with the ranger now. I had it on and warmed up, decided to turn it off and add some fuel before I went for a spin... mistake.

It sounds like it dying while cold is a separate issue. Hopefully you’ll get both sorted soon!

While it’s running, check the voltage on the battery. If it’s 12.6 or lower, the alternator isn’t working or is very weak (or not hooked up right, etc); if it’s 13-14 then the alternator is working and your battery is toast.
How old are your jumper cables? I have a janky old set that takes eons to use because it’s so corroded internally
. They live in the shed now for when the tractor dies, but even then I have a lithium jump pack as well which is swell
.

Sounds like a dead battery or a battery with bad leads to me. If you can kick/jump start it the alt is probably fine if it runs with the lights/accessories on. My ex’s 2002 had similar issues; both the battery and the trunk relocation leads were bad.

We’re poppin! Just needed a little time as you said (I’m not the most patient person you’ll ever meet) . Got a quick spin in just as the snow started to fall. I’m going to wait until it cools off a little then strap the exhaust on.
I’m charging the starter and my go pro so I can post some noise after I’m done.
Oppos I owe a case of beer to:

My friend mentioned the leads because the cars so old. That was back when he first came over to see it and I kind of forgot about it until you said something. I’m willing to be they are at lest part of the problem if not all of it. Thanks for mentioning it!
